These huge, imposing birds known as Belgian Malines, Mechels, or Coucou de Malines are calm and docile. Malines are an interesting general purpose fowl that combines a very good laying capability (140 to 160) large to jumbo eggs per year with very good flesh growth making them an excellent choice for a heritage meat bird. They shine as a meat bird as they are the only bird with fat marbled through the meat giving it incredible flavour and extremely moist meat. The roosters range from 10 to 13lbs and the hens 8 to 10 lbs. We butchered ours at 18 weeks (a little early) and the roosters finished at 7- 7 1/2 lbs. Now we know why they are renowned for their meat qualities!
Our flock is from Bulbs of Fire from their first and second lines. Our Malines are Cuckoo in colour and have feathered legs and white skin.
The Malines is an elegant, impressive giant who vigilantly steps around his hens with grace for such a large bird. An excellent choice for a backyard dual purpose flock. The pictures below are of our Malines at day old, 8 weeks old and laying age. The meat pictures are the cockerels at 18 weeks old when they were butchered.
